Suzanne Merritt’s art is as much about her lush surfaces as it is about the subject matter she chooses, which is most often inspired by the natural world. Her encaustic works are created through a process of painting and fusing, layer upon layer of molten wax, resin, and pigment—as many as thirty layers go into each painting. The luminosity of wax on wood allows the viewer to see beneath the surface, creating a depth and mystery in many of her pieces. She often opts for rich, saturated color, or embeds gems and papers beneath the wax to enhance the depth and mood of a piece. The combination of smooth-as-glass finishes next to rough, dimensional surfaces, enhances the overall tactile sensation of her work. These are engaging works of art—inviting the viewer to touch and feel the piece, which she heartily encourages.
